A Day of Listening and Learning with Celtic Teacher John Philip Newell and Musician Fran McKendree

John Philip NewellThe Reverend Dr. John Philip Newell is an ordained Church of Scotland minister with a passion for peace among the great wisdom traditions of humanity. In 2011 he received the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington, DC in recognition of his work in spirituality and peacemaking. His PhD is from the University Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books, including Christ of the Celts, Praying with the Earth, A New Harmony, and his most recent visionary title The Rebirthing of God: Christianity’s Struggle for New Beginnings.

Fran McKendreeFran McKendree began his professional career playing at coffee houses in and around Syracuse University, and after moving to the Glens Falls area of NY in 1969, formed ‘McKendree Spring.’ This ensemble toured with some of the most exciting artists of the 70s, sharing the stage with performers such as Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and Van Morrison, playing various memorable venues as well, including Carnegie Hall, the Fillmore East, and the Kennedy Center. He heeded the call to change direction in the late 70s and took some time for reflection. After he and his wife, Diana, joined the Episcopal Church, Fran began to work with a youth group, quickly discovering that music was an important part of that relationship. He was soon invited to participate in provincial gatherings which led to working with the church on a national level. He has continued to explore his calling, going on to coordinate and provide music/worship leadership for conferences, retreats, and national gatherings.
